Vincent Wongaiham-Petersen

I started teaching one of my first languages (Tagalog) in 1998, did this on and off in the intervening years, but didn’t even entertain the thought of leaving the confines of my safe office desk job in an import-export company until 2009. That’s when I did my CELTA, began teaching English (one of my other first languages!), and found my calling.

I mainly do in-company classes but also am a regular fixture in universities. As a regular attendee of seminars and workshops, I know how invigorating and enlightening these could be and also know that there’s no better opportunity to meet people who are just as enthusiastic as I am in expanding their horizons. So I guess it was inevitable that I would end up organizing and coordinating events almost from the moment I joined the committee in 2019 up to the moment when I left the events coordinator role at the end of 2023.

Now that events are in the more than capable hands of our new co-events coordinators, you’ll find me in the co-chair seat sharing the responsibility with my fantastic colleague, George. Together, we’re steering the ship with a focus on supporting our members and keeping our community as vibrant and inclusive as ever.

I may no longer be the go-to person for event queries, but if you want to chat about anything else HELTA-related, or just fancy a good old conversation on the joys of language teaching, drop me a line at .
